The Artcafé Galleries in Mersea Island and in Colchester exhibiting new Pottery by Usch Spettigue

2015/03/17 Exhibition

The Artcafé Galleries in West Mersea and in Colchester: drop by, have a coffee, and choose one of Usch’s Jars, Pots and Bowls to take home.

The Artcafé gallery features a wide range of original work by established local (and some not so local) artists. We like to select work that has integrity and you will always find an inspiring selection of original paintings, etchings, linocuts, ceramics, jewellery and photography.
Our aim from the very beginning was to create an exhibition space within a vibrant café environment, where great art can be enjoyed without any pressure from overbearing sales people.

The Artcafé is located on the island of Mersea at the mouth of the River Blackwater on the east coast of Essex 50 miles out of London and just 9 miles south of Colchester on the B1025 and we (the artcafé) are on the corner of Church Road and Coast Road opposite the Norman Church of St. Peter and St. Paul. Simply stay on the main road (B1025) when you come onto the island and you’ll come right to us.
Being an island, Mersea has just one road link with the Essex Mainland via the causway known as the ‘Strood’ which can flood for an hour or so at spring tides. For accurate tide times check out the Mersea Island website

The Artcafé was founded in 2003 on Mersea Island by James and Maggie Weaver, a husband and wife team with the aim of combining the things they love in life. Maggie (a Chef) and James (an Artist) were looking to create a place for people to meet up, get a great cup of coffee and fabulous homemade food surrounded by local original and inspiring artwork. Nearly ten years on and we are still going strong and have grown to incorporate an Artcafé in Colchester and more recently a delicatessen next door to the Mersea Artcafé.

In 2010 we added a third partner, Jenny Rolfe, James & Maggie’s eldest daughter who had been instrumental in getting the Colchester café up and running and brought with her a new set off skills with her retail and management experience, she also has a natural passion and flair with food.

Although we have grown as a business we’ve always endeavoured to remain true to our beginnings as a small, family run business and as such almost everything we sell is handmade by us, either on site in our cafés or at our production kitchen in the ‘Cake-Hole’ delicatessen.

We do not believe in mass production here, we aim to buy local and free range where we can and try to recycle most of our waste. Our menu changes quarterly to take advantage of local seasonal fresh ingredients, including fresh Mersea landed fish, which we buy direct from our fishermen here and use for our ‘Fish dish of the day’. We are very proud of our breakfast menu too, which includes a hearty full english, drop scones with crispy bacon & maple syrup, smoked salmon & scrambled eggs on toasted ciabatta and smoked haddock with poached eggs. Of an afternoon you’ll find us serving all manner of homemade cakes, cream teas and sandwiches, so there’s no excuse not to pop in after a stroll along the beach!
